Problem and solution

The problem

Business Central administrators need reliable backups but often rely on manual routines, fragmented runbooks, and limited visibility into export status.

The solution

Rue de Net BC Backup centralizes backup setup, execution, logging, and status refresh in Business Central while using Microsoft-supported APIs and customer-owned Azure storage.

Benefits

Less manual backup work

Start backups on demand or schedule weekly recurring runs from setup without custom scripts.

Operational control in your tenant

Exports are written directly to your Azure Blob container, so retention and access stay under your governance.

Faster incident response

The backup history gives teams an overview of backup activity.

Key features

  • Official Admin Center API

Database exports go through Microsoft's supported Business Central Admin Center API. No workarounds or unsupported tooling.

  • On demand or scheduled

Start a backup with one click, or create a quota-safe weekly Job Queue schedule right from the setup page.

  • Your own Azure Blob Storage

.bacpac exports are written straight to a container in your Azure subscription. You stay in control of retention and access.

  • Notifications and export metrics

See the backup name, time and remaining monthly exports as soon as a backup is ordered, and get notified when it completes or fails.

  • Backup history in Business Central

Every attempt is logged with status, operation ID, storage location, user and error details, shared across all companies.

  • Role Center insight

Administrators see completed, failed and pending backups on the security administration Role Center, plus a 30-day summary when they sign in.

How Rue de Net BC Backup works

  1. Connect

An administrator sets up the Azure resources needed to configure RdN BC Backup.

  2. Back up

Order a backup manually or run it from the Job Queue.

  3. Monitor

Follow progress on a dedicated Role Center that is refreshed regularly.

  4. Restore

Administrators can download backups from Azure through Business Central and keep their own copy.

Security by design

  • Secrets in Isolated Storage. Client secrets and SAS tokens are kept in module-scoped Isolated Storage (the client secret and export token encrypted), never stored in the setup table, and never exposed to other extensions or the debugger.
  • Least-privilege downloads. Browser downloads use a separate read-only, container-scoped SAS token. The export token never leaves Business Central.
  • Permission sets for every role. Separate permissions for administrators.
  • D365 BACKUP/RESTORE enforced. Only users with Microsoft's backup permission can start database exports.

Requirements for Business Central and Azure

For Business Central SaaS only. On-premises and locally hosted Business Central installations are not supported, because all exports use the online Admin Center API.

Microsoft

  • Dynamics 365 Business Central online (2025 release wave 2 or later), on a paid subscription
  • A Microsoft Entra app registration with AdminCenter.ReadWrite.All, created by the included setup script (tenant administrators only)
  • Users with the D365 BACKUP/RESTORE permission set

Azure

  • An Azure subscription with a Blob Storage account and container, deployable with the included setup script
  • An account SAS token for exports
  • A read-only container SAS token for downloads

Frequently asked questions

How many backups can we run each month?

Business Central allows 10 database exports per environment each month. Rue de Net BC Backup shows how many exports remain. The weekly schedule uses 4–5 of them and skips a run when only the reserved manual exports (2 by default) are left.

Where are backups stored?

In your own Azure Blob Storage container. Rue de Net never receives or stores your data.

Can scheduled backups run without a signed-in user?

Yes. Scheduled backups run weekly from the Business Central Job Queue with app (client credentials) authentication, so no signed-in user is needed.

How do we restore a backup?

Authorized administrators download a completed backup directly from Azure and import it into a new database.

Does it work with on-premises Business Central?

No. Rue de Net BC Backup supports Business Central SaaS environments only, because all exports use the online Admin Center API.

Is it available on AppSource?

Rue de Net BC Backup is currently delivered as a per-tenant extension. AppSource preparation is underway.
